Using This Journal

What's involved?

On a daily basis you will start your devotional time with praise, thanksgiving and forgiveness, then concentrate on two main things - Bible reading and prayer.

  • Bible Reading: You will read specific portions of the Bible and will be led in your journal to write down your own reflection and application on what you have just read.
  • Prayer: as well as praying about what you have just read you will also focus on a particular area of prayer of your choosing - either 'Salvation', 'Christian Leaders', 'Family', 'Yourself', 'Authority' and 'Others'.

There is also place for entering 'sermon notes' and 'church notices' as well as pages for making any general notes.

At the end of the journal we have what we call our 'Advanced Training' pages that guide you to take up other Christian disciplines such as 'mentoring', 'accountability, scripture memorisation and book reading.

At the end of the journal there is a set of Christian disciplines that  you can use to keep you on track in your Christian walk.

How long does it take to complete the journal each day?

That really depends on which reading plan you use and how long you spend in payer. If you use the 'Bible-a-year' plan it takes about 15 minutes to complete the readings, whereas you can spend as much or as little time as you like using the 'Flexible' reading plan. Add to that approximately 5 - 10 minutes to complete your daily entry and however long you spend in prayer. So for someone new to devotional times you may take 15 - 20 minutes a day, whereas someone more experienced and disciplined may want to spend around an hour.

Do you follow a set reading plan?

Yes. As already mentioned, you can follow your own reading plan or use the two provided in the Journal. The first is a 'Bible-in-a-year' plan which has a balanced selection of scriptures from both Old and New Testaments. The second is a 'Flexible' plan where each day you read as much as you like from a particular section of the Bible.

Are there any guidelines for my prayer time?

Yes. We have a prayer guide that  takes you through various areas of prayer such as salvation and healing, as well as focusing on types of people such as Church Leaders and family members. There are areas for you to write in names as well as check off when prayers are answered. We have also written out some sample prayers all based on scripture for you to use if you wish.  You are obviously free to pray however long you want but this is a great guide to use. You can see it in full by viewing the Journal.

Can I utilise my journal in any other way.

Yes! Using your journal in a small group setting is a great way for everyone to share what God has been saying to them. Have you ever been a part of a small group where the leader asks at the start of the meeting if anyone has got anything to share? The room can often go silent and people start looking to the floor. But imagine the scenario if all group members were journaling? Everyone would have something to share and faith would arise as stories of a personal God are related around the room.
